Mesquite Poteet, Mesquite Horn promote defensive coordinators to HFC status

Mesquite ISD elected to fill both vacancies for its head football coaching positions at Mesquite Poteet and Mesquite Horn in one night. Both head coaching positions are being filled from within their respective staffs and both are coming from the defensive coordinator positions. For both new coaches, it will be their first head coaching job.

The Mesquite Poteet Pirates are promoting defensive coordinator Rodney McLain into the head coaching position after Kody Groves moved up into Mesquite ISD’s athletic director position. The Pirates went six seasons with Kody Groves at the helm, going an impressive 56-21 overall with a record of 11-6 in the playoffs. In three of the six seasons, the Pirates managed to go reach the third round of the playoffs or later.

The Mesquite Horn Jaguars will go with defensive coordinator Chris Hudler as their head football coach after Michael Overton announced his retirement from coaching after 16 seasons as a head football coach.

Overton, in 2013 switched across town from West Mesquite after seven seasons to take the helm of the Horn Jaguars.  In his 13 seasons as a coach in the Mesquite ISD system, Overton’s teams did not fail to make the playoffs. Prior to his stint with West Mesquite, he was at Farmersville from 2002 to 2004. His total record as a coach was 116-68 with 13 playoff appearances.
